Have you suffered from food poisoning while abroad?
This very common viral infection is known for its association with holiday illness through poor hygienic conditions, whether this be on an all-inclusive holiday resort or on a cruise. Norovirus, if not treated quickly may cause enhanced illness, with some harrowing symptoms.
The three most common are:
- Projectile vomiting
- A raised temperature
There are also some other less common symptoms which can include:
- Muscular pain
- Abdominal cramps
- A decreased urine output
- Dry mouth, eyes and lips
Being ill on holiday is the last thing you need. This virus, if not contained can spread extremely quickly, especially where there are lots of people within a small and enclosed environment.
Norovirus can be contracted very easily and passed around equally as fast. The virus lives on contaminated surfaces and can be contracted either orally or through faecal matter. The source of the virus can stem from contaminated food products, where the handlers have not been up to scratch with their hygiene and washing of hands, or from the surfaces where the food is prepared that has not been cleaned effectively during preparation. Common foods that harbour the virus include shellfish, vegetables and salads and Norovirus can also be contracted through water that is contaminated with sewage.
